Coyotes

What do you know about eastern coyotes ?
The reason that I ask is that at our camp the other night a pack was howling just a short distance out from the campfire, and later that night, ran by just across the brook from my tent site
Normally I don't use a tent and either sleep "out" or just under a tarp so I'm thinking that sleeping out in the open like that might not be such a good idea.
I know that the modern eastern coyote is larger than it's western cousin and is said to have bred with the Canadian gray wolf. Whether or not that has made them more aggressive or dangerous is what I've got on my mind

I am planning a trip the first week in September in South Western MA. (The South Tatonic Trail and the first section of the AT in MA). The loop will be approximately 33 miles, and because of the three days that I will be on the trail, I will need to find water.
So I ask you, what do you use to filter your water?

I'm thinking of hiking Moosilauke on Monday. What would folks suggest as a good first trail to hike this peak? It almost looks like parking at the Ravine Lodge and hiking the Gorge Brook Trail would be the shortest and would also offer the possibility of doing a loop instead of an in and out hike.

Wild River Carter Mountain Loop

Hello,

I know there's some sort of circular loop stemming from the Wild River Trail and Wild River Campsite start point. This loop has different possibililities such as 21 miles or even 42 miles and could go up Carter Mt. as a possibility. Does anyone have any recommendations of what would make a good three day backpacking trip at this location including going up Carter Mt., but not the climbing section of the Mt. which would be most difficult?

Thanks!

At - Dalton To Crystal Mt

I wanted to do this as a day hike to Cheshire but the guy I usually hike with couldn't make it so we did an out and back.

We started at the parking lot in Dalton on High St. We had a little trouble finding it at first but we managed.

The trail runs through a very pretty forest. In the beginning it's a little wet but the folks that maintain this section have done a wonderful job of bridging the worst areas.

The trail mostly climbs for the first mile or so with some of it being steep but thankfully short. This area was obviously logged at one time and the forest roads crisscross the trail through out.

The only draw back to this entire hike was my fault. I did not bring enough water with me and ended up conserving more than I should. We crossed only one stream at the camp area and I would guess it was at risk of drying out. I would recommend if you do this hike or this section that you bring ample water. All in all it was a good time and a great day to be in the woods (aren't they all )

I'm in a discussion on another board about "packin'heat" while fishing.
While I'm sure that there are lurkers there that would agree with me, I'm seem to be alone in thinking that it's unnecessary.
I could see it if there was a danger of mountain lions or maybe even brown bear, but these guys carry in defense of "crack-heads and meth-heads"
Personally, in most cases I think that it's some sort of macho paranoia, but there are a few folks who seem level headed about it. ....(the others are down right scary )

So, I though I'd ask here what you all thought about guns, hiking, and the safety or lack there of on the trail.
I know that there's a wacko element almost everywhere you go, but it's not something I let worry me.
What do you think ?

Anyone ever hike Glastenbury this time of year ?
The hike on the AT/Long Trail is over 10 miles each way
I've mapped out a trail from the east that's more like 5, but between 2400' and 2900' we'll be on a jeep road/snowmobile trail.
I'm wondering whether that trail will be loaded with raspberry briars or what.
I know that the area is heavily wooded and that works in our favor, but I'd hate to get all the way out there and be bushwacking through the prickers

Hiking Stratton Mt & Stratton Pond

My wife, the pups and I headed up to Stratton Mt in VT with the intent to spend 3 days and 2 nights on the trail. The forecast was for perfect weather. When we got to the trail head we had it confirmed once again that weather-liars are not to be trusted.

It was cold. And gray. But mostly it was cold. We deliberated for a few minutes before we decided to go for it.

A lot of work and effort has been put into this section of trail recently and it is gorgeous. It was always wet for the first 1/2 mile or so and people trying to avoid the mud had widened the trail. This area is very popular with day hikers. The work done in this area has brought the trail back to close to the original width.

We crested the mountain and there were very few people up top. It was just too cold. It had to be down in the 30s and the wind was knocking that back a few more degrees.

We headed down the north side of the hill and soon we were in warmth and occasional sunshine. But it was short lived. The pond was seriously overcast and there was a definite chop on the water.

We hiked around and set up. We spent a very chilly, rainy night snuggled up in the tent. We woke to blue blue skies and glorious sunshine. A beautiful VT morning.

Unfortunately at some point Mrs Fox's Big Agnes air pad had developed a leak. We went over it as best we could and tried to find the leak. We could not.

We decided rather than spend a night without a pad we would cut the trip short by a night, modify our route and head out.

We took our time and had a gorgeous day of it. We only encountered two other people the entire day. It was wonderful. We all had a great time and it was just great to get out as a family.

Loaded the gang into the car and headed north for an out and back on a short section of AT. I thought this would just be another standard walk through New England forest. Not so... This section is absolutely gorgeous.

This section is basically split into two part. The beginning is wet and travels next to the Pittsfield watershed. The second half is loaded with ferns and fields and views to make you act like a tourist.

The only negative experience we had was the 8 boy scouts that seemed to need to ghetto camp by pitching their tents right next to ours and playing grab ass well into the night. The positive that came out of that, my wife insists that we stealth camp from now on.

Suggestions For White Mountain Hike

Hey everyone,

First time poster to this forum.

My friend and I have reasonable hiking and backpacking experience, and have taken a mountaineering course. We climbed Willey's slide this last winter and it was a blast. We would like to do a couple of peaks in the 48 that would be a good place for us to start. We'll probably tackle them this summer and with a little experience under our belts, continue our winter adventures next season.

We would like to do 1 or 2 nights overnight, and want reasonably easy to follow trails that would allow us to get 2 or 3 peaks in at most. Nothing terribly difficult in terms of climbing please, we'd like to start of on the lighter side - we respect the mountains and know how dangerous they can be. I have purchased the AMG White Mountain Guide, so we can get more information once we have some suggestions. I would just like a starting point - there's so many possibilities it can be overwhelming to look for a starting point!

Thanks!
