For a long time I have heard stories of Bald Eagles in Rhode Island but have never seen one. Last week while traveling north on Rte 114 through Barrington into East Providence I noticed a very large bird sitting a top a chunk of ice in 100 acre cove. I pulled to the side of the road and quickly realized what the animal was, a VERY large bald eagle. However, I did not at the time have my camera with me, and it was too far away for the camera phone. Fortunately enough there are a set of trails that run through this particular area. I plan on packing up the camera and the largest telephoto lens in my arsenal and heading out to try to capture some pictures of this magnificent creature.

.... there's a nest on a small island in the Situate Reservoir
you can see it from Rt 116 just south of the N. Situate center.
ssshh... it's a secret ;)

A couple of weeks ago I took my father out eagle watching
The first place we went was the Haddam Meadows SP in CT, on the Connecticut River.
Directly off from the boat launch there was a deer carcass out on the ice.
Three eagles were going to town on it.
That is something that I'd ever seen before

There's so many eagles in southern New England in the late winter nowadays it's not at all unusual to see them. Anyplace where there's open water you'll see them either in the tallest trees or soaring way up in the sky

They're beautiful birds! Where I lived in Plymouth a few years back, there was a small park down the street where I'd go for walks with Skippy. There were a couple of Bald Eagles that you could see from time to time during the winter months. It's the only place in MA I've ever seen an eagle.

My dog Skippy weighs only 8 lbs. One day while walking through the park, a hawk swooped down and passed overhead, about 10 ft above me. As it passed over us, it dropped down & glided above the dirt road we were on, about 5 feet above the ground. Guess he was just checking us out  .

Majer, I hope you get some pics! I'd love to see them.

~Steve.
