Has anyone used The Spot? I was on Long Island last weekend and my nephew (who is very big into getting himself way out there in wilderness areas, ice climbing and stuff like that) recommended it to me. He has an older model and has found that it brings his wife peace of mind and also gives him the ability to request help in case of emergency. He's never had to use it for emergency purposes but does use it on a regular basis to report his position, it is one of the permanent items in his pack. I was thinking about getting one since many times I do hike alone and my wife worries.
At this time it lists for $169 and you also pay for a subscription service. It uses satellites to communicate, not cell phone towers.

Has anyone used The Spot?
Rich, a friend of mine (who lives in Colorado and does many big peaks, including two Denali attempts) has used it with mixed results. When it works, it does give his wife peace of mind. It is also cool for his friends, like me, to track his progress. That said, it did not register his course when he was last on Denali. My reference for reviews of these kinds of tech gear, if REI (though I haven't checked to see if they reviewed the SPOT).
