Sat at the north jetty (salisbury res.) this morning with a coffee. Got some pictures of the sunrise. When's the last time you took a moment to just chill and watch a sunrise? It's amazing.

Back in '04 I was fortunate to watch the sunrise on top of Mt. Haleakala on the island of Maui. The temperature at the time of sunrise was a mild 34 degrees. With an elevation of over 10K feet I'd be walking along the summit and all of a sudden enter a pocket of super thin air, that took a little getting used to.

Watching the sunrise while being higher than the clouds was out of this world.

Other than that, I'm not really a morning person so catching a sunrise is a rare occurance.

Wow, great pictures y'all! I love sunrise/sunset pictures. I'll share one of my favorites: got this one in Saco, ME last fall.

Very cool.

Here is one more I got on a different day (couple weeks ago). It's the same place, Salisbury Reservation.

Wow! Awesome. I need to get a lens with a good zoom for my camera (it's a Rebel xsi) so I can get closer pictures for things like this!

Mine is actually a point and click Nikon CoolPix P100.

I love it. I'd like a decent SLR, but this thing works great for me.

Wow, nice shot again! I almost caught the sunrise with my point & shoot this morning, but my workout finishes around 6:30, so by the time I see the pretty colors in the sky and get to the beach, it's usually over and the pretty colors are gone, lol. One day I'll get there in time. Is sunrise getting later or earlier?...

Point and shoots work great and they're way more portable than the Rebel... I just have the lens that came with it so it doesn't have fantastic zoom. Actually, my Kodak probably has a better zoom than the lens on the Rebel. Gotta work on getting some new lenses.

There are pros and cons to both styles of cameras. For a while I was dead set against bringing my SLR on the trail with me for fear of damaging it or the amount of space it takes up in the pack. After losing one too many of those "once in a lifetime shots" due to the crappy settings on a point and shoot I make it a point to bring the SLR with me. Spend the coin and get a 300mm lens, you'll be amazed at what you've been missing. Plus using the SLR allows me to shoot in RAW which then allows me to doctor up a shot in some pretty funky ways.

I've used the Canon Rebel XS ($549.00) in the past and it has more than enough functions to keep the novice photographer occupied. I've also found that the Canon's are slightly more user friendly when compared to the Nikon's.

Second the nomination for the Rebel. I have the xsi and love it! I was a total SLR n00b when I got it and I'm slowly learning. Quite user friendly, and it's affordable.
