Mt. Washington Valley Area, 48 4K's. Summertime is quiet at the ski clubs. Stay over, meetup, make friends for life. Wanna try it. Mixed groups, young, old, men and women. Ancient mountains and time stands still.

ANYONE IN FOR THE “MOATS”

I would like to hike the Moats early this season 1st or 2nd week of June. This hike is so very local and should be the signature hike for all N. Conway area hikers. Sort of hike 101, I guess. The route I would suggest is the full day from south to north and end at Diana’s Bath for a possible swim to cool off and rest. This would be a ten miler and run 6 to 7 hours. This route also has a short option, ‘up and down’, South Moat, that allows for elevation gain and good views for interested hikers who can’t commit to the full length hike. If there is enough interest we could have one group hike south and one hike north and meet for lunch.

Here are most of the hikes I have done in the White Mountains. I have some repeats on the 48’s but the effort to gain each of the 48’s again would limit the almost endless other very excellent opportunities.

Some of the other listed hikes are worthy of repeating for the scenic, or unusual features involved. All from the list are easily accessible from the EICSL clubs.

48 Four Thousand Footers

Giant Steps ,Lila’s Ledge
Imp ,Ice Gulch
Howker Ridge Falls ,Tuckerman Ravine
Thompson’s Brook ,Castle Ravine
King Ravine ,Castles
Chocorua ,Three Sisters
Kearsarge ,Iron Mountain
Glen Boulder ,Frankenstein Cliff
Arethusa Falls ,Webster Cliff

If anyone has any questions on different routes to or from any of the above destinations just ask. I’d be glad to give you my two cents.

Moat Mountain trail considered Hiking 101, more like crash course in vertical ascents, lol. I remember my 1st time up to South Moat, I packed a little heavier than I should have. As I left Passaconaway Road, I thought "hey this is a nice gradual grade" until the section where the mountain bike trail breaks off and after you traverse "the hump" you come across that 1/2 mile section of 60 degree incline that is littered with rip rap.

I have to admit though, the view of the valley from the Moats is spectacular. And far more rewarding than the peaks on the east side of the valley (Middle Mtn, Black Cap, etc.)

Side note about the moats, in the middle of summer there is nothing better than after a long day, than sitting on the back porch of Muddy Moose enjoying a pint of Tuckermans watching the sun set over Middle Moat Mtn.

Excellent. We are interactive now.
Thank you for the reply. Not 101 for learning to hike but 101 for the N. Conway area. Many great spots but a mistake I made/make, and now I will correct, is to gain the Moats. Imagine all the times I have passed by this spot and not explored it. Here I have been up Chocorua 4 times and not a simple walk to the peak there, eh?! I have seen several people decline the last 400' of that and settle for the under summit area as the end.
Now tell me again about a 60 degree slope. Is for real? How much of that? I guess many of the trails have that. It is only when it is continuous that you may need a parachute.
Hey, I think I finally found the forum I want to post some hikes. Prove my impression right.
Come on, we can meetup without virtual meetups, and really have a blast!!!
