Hey hows it going. New to the forum. Starting soon at the 48. Gonna be hitting up my 1st mountain on Wed, Monadnock. I've never climbed a mountain before. Done short hikes when I was youger, but I think this will be good for me. I need to pick up a pain of boots tomorrow, but not going to use them on Wed. Gonna rock sneakers probably. Need to start putting a good pack together as well. I have the bare essentials now, nothing crazy. Enough for a day hike, maybe 1 night if i get stuck.

For the 48 I need to do a lot of research in the next week. I'm gonna start at the bottom and work my way up. But I was wondering, I know some of the mountains you can do more than 1 peak in a day. Not sure which, hence the research.

thanks for the time
Steve

Congrats on starting the 48! And you'll have a blast with Monadnock, as long as the weather's OK. It's a great hike. What trail are you taking up? We're doing Monadnock in two weeks and I can't wait. Report back on the weather & mud/snow conditions! :)

Get the AMC White Mountains guide - it's a great book to use planning hikes in the Whites, and it has a list of the 4000ers in the back you can check off as you do them.

Maybe boots are better. Keep hiking shoes with you and socks in case you go in a stream a bit. Dry is better for your feet.
48's have many different schools of thought. One mind set my friends and I wondered about was Doan of one hike for one peak. After finishing the 48's and looking back, I now understand where he was coming from. Peak bagging or 1 for 1 just do it anyway you like. I used AMC and RMC huts a few times, slept on the ground once, lean-to's. You have a great and worthy goal ahead for you. FYI Mt Isolation has become the last for many. See what your last is and why?
I hope you have all the intense memories at end. Hiking friends, excellent health and final goal, time and the beautiful state of NH be with you. Good luck.

Just got back. 4hrs 25m total with about a 30m detour on the wrong trail. No maps where I parked. I took the troll road up to white arrow. Wow I can't believe the entire time I was on white arrow it was very vertical, and all ice. I wish I had crampons. The pucker factor was huge.

Definitely need hiking boots.

Ugh, I'm going in 2 weeks, hope it isn't all ice by then, none of us have ice gear! although next week it's supposed to really warm up so hopefully we'll be OK.

Yeah, definitely get a good pair of hiking boots!

Mud I will happily take over ice! My fiance hates mud, can't stand it. I tease him all the time, he can't stand getting it all over his boots and pants. Going to buy him some gaiters for this year :P

I'm a Jeep owner, so I LONG for mud season!

I just need to find some unmaintained roads in the area (southern NH).

I hate to hijack the topic, but if anyone knows and (legal) places to take the kids for a ride off road - I'd love to hear about them.

Cheers!

I was on Monadnock this past Sunday. The bottom part of the White Arrow was difficult from what I heard from another hiker, but the upper part, from the Ampetheater/White Arrow intersection on up was fine, Just had to be careful at times, that's all.

The route I took was from the park HQ, Parker trail to Lost Farm trail to Cliff trail, over Bald Rock, then the Smith Connector. Then took the Ampetheather to the White Arrow to the summit. Leaving the summit I took the White Dot and then the White Cross back down.
