Does any have any recommendations for a moderate 5-8 mile hike off the Kancamagus highway? I don't want to do too much elevation because of the snow cover, but I’d like a good scenic hike.

Thoughts?

Welch- Dickie ,... not off the Kanc, but nearby in Campton off the road to Waterville Valley.
Not a lot of elevation but a great view.

Most of the popular trails get broken out pretty quick and there is little need for snowshoes.. Ice might be more of a problem. Crampons or some other traction aid might be advisable
I don't have crampons myself but I do have ice creepers used for icefishing.
A lot of people use"Stablicers"
An other way would be to bushwack around any bad icy spots
Have fun

Hello Andrew, may I suggest doing the Sabbaday Brook Trail to Pine Bend Brook/Mount Tripyramid Trail,it is about 4.9 miles long or if your looking for something shorter you could go to the fourth crossing of Sabbaday Brook on the Sabbaday Brook Trail, that is about 2.8 miles.Great scenery. If your looking for a nice flat scenic hike may I suggest the Pemigewasset Wilderness Trail to Desolation Shelter, long hike[9.5 miles]but worth it,great scenery! If your looking for short distances you could hike the Wilderness Trail to Franconia Brook Trail which is 2.9 miles or to Bondcliff Trail which is 4.7 miles and if you feel as though you can keep on going you could go to Cedar Brook Trail which is 5.4 miles deep into the Wilderness Trail. There are so many trails to hike up there it's just hard deciding on which one to do. Do like the commercial and label your eating utencils the differant trails names you'd like to hike and then spin the bottle, where it lands is where you'll hike! Well hope I was able to help you with your search for a hike. Great site and happy hiking!

You know, I thought about that!

I think it is going to probably be Greely Ponds for a warm up, the wilderness trail. I hope to get some pictures. It will be my first time on both of the trails. I'm pumped.

Thanks!

Well, we ended up doing the Lincoln Woods Trail/ Wilderness Trail; 15(ish) miles of trudging though the snow. I must say, i loved the weather and scenery, but walking in the snow as it was, left a little to be desired. It began ok in the morning but once it melted enough that your foot broke though with every step, it was a little tough going once we had 13 or so miles behind us.

We got to the suspension bridge and had lunch. Wow, what a beautiful area. Once thing I noticed that took me back a little was the COMPLETE lack of wildlife. We saw a total of one bird, a black fly, and one mosquito. I was shocked. Nothing.

I can’t wait for the snow to go away and open up the trails a little more.

I have some pictures I will post as soon as I get them.
