I did a weekend overnight to the Naumen tentsite near the Mizpah Hut with some buddies last fall. It was a beautiful hike, only slightly crowded, but it reaffirmed a theory I have: You can camp 200ft off trail in the Whites if you're below treeline, but finding a spot 200 ft off trail that is worth it, not so easy. It's hard to see even 20 ft from a trail in a lot of places.
I've been asking everyone I know (I'm new here) about such places off trail for camping, but we all come up with the same conclusion. My Friends and I got stuck hiking down in the dark from Passaconaway once since the old Camp Rich site was full of Scouts, FULL. No luck on off-site camping up there either.
I too am looking for one or two weekend hikes for this summer.

Please tell us how the hammock tent works out. I've been looking at loads of them, but I haven't found one I like. I've been working on a design for a spar-style hammock with a tent sort of ballooned over it and staked, sort of a tarp between trees with a bed hanging in the middle and a zip-to bug net bottom. I am very interested as well as in the hike. I like that too. Have fun!

the hammock tent is a relatively inexpensive one from Campmore called Hammock Bliss. I was taken back by how expensive they can get there was one for over 200 beans! This one has a built in no see-em net and i had to buy a separate rain fly. That is a Kelty Noah's tarp. I gave it a trial run on memorial day weekend at my place in NH. It worked well i stayed dry and warm, i do suggest that you have a full size thermo rest, my 3/4 size kept sliding out from under me due to the u shape your body stays in. Its a good investment for someone who wants light weight and no poles to deals with.

I've read that you should use one of the cheap closed cell foam pads and cut it to shape.
Don't really know myself.
I've tried sleeping in a hammock before.... maybe it's something that you need to get used to...
I keep thinking about it though
