Located in Sutton, MA the Purgatory Chasms are a great place for picnicers and climbers alike. We visited the park this past weekend and were highly surprised by its size and excellent climbing/rock-hopping.

The chasms were said to have been created 14,000 years ago when a mass of melted glacial ice stormed through the area. It left behind an ominous chasm reaching up to 70ft ledges.

There are many trails available here, but the major one is the blue-blaze that travels directly through the chasm. From there you can take side trails up and over (if you are a good climber), or even bring some gear to take on the rock ledges. A great area is called "Fat Man's Misery." It's a small crack in a rock face that drops a good 15-20 feet. Most people can fit through but I saw some out-of-shapers that needed a pull up.

Overall it was a nice place to get a climb or two in and enjoy the sites. Also, not alot of people know about the park, so it's rarely busy.

Also a good thing about it is that whatever the temp is that day, when you in the chasm its going to be a good 10 degrees cooler. So if its hot as hell out thats a good one to go to.

I've been to PC before - great place to spend the day. I like how they have names for all the different features, like FMM. :D
