This weekend my wife and I completed the 48 NH 4000 footers.

We started this journey in August of 2002 as very inexerienced hikers. At that time I was 49 and she was 41. We hiked up Liberty and set camp at the tentsite. This August day was the hotest weekend of the year with temps approaching 100. I thought I was going to die. As you should do in the wilderness we hung the food from a tree, but right next to the tent. :o WOW were we lucky that night.

We have come a long way.

We finish this weekend by hiking the three Bonds. We headed out on the Wilderness Trail late Friday morning. About 1/2 mile on the Boncliff trail we set up camp. We hiked Bondcliff, Mt Bond and West Bond the following day. With dinner that night we had champagne that I carried in.

Then hiked out Sunday morning.

Now we are talking about working on ME and VT's 4000 footers.

I have kept a journal of each hike and should put the finishing touches on it in the next couple months.

Congrats on hitting the 48 NH 4000 footers. Hopefully I will be able to say that in a few years.

Congrats to you both!

My fiancee and I finished back in 2003. At the time, I thought I would just start over and redo them. But, now I'm waiting for my nephews to get a little older so they can try it out. Therefore, Since then, I've moved away from lists and started to just try and hike trails that I had never been on. I've found that hiking is much more than peakbagging. Doing the 48 was great fun though. I would not have changed a thing

Congratulations! How does it feel to be done? I plan to do Bonds very soon, want to camp partway up bondcliff trail. Are there many good campsites and what about water?

It feels great to have completed a goal that we set a few years ago.

As it stands right now we are considering VT and ME 4000 footers. That will add 21 more to the list. We are also thinking about doing VT Long Trail in sections. Also we will be hiking other trails that we haven't done before.

Yes there are some good stops to set up camp on the Bondcliff trail. The spot we found was by luck. From the Wilderness trail we went about 1/2 mile on the Bondcliff. The Black Brook will be on your right. You can't see it but you hear it. On your right you will see an area that was once cleared and now has very small signs on a few trees saying its a vegetation recovery area. Hike past that about 50 feet or so then bushwhack through the 6 foot evergreens until you come to the brook. On the other side of the brook is where we camped.
The only drawback is that it was closer to the water than regulations require. There was a well established rock fire rign already there.

When you hike this trail, make sure you have enough water. On the Bondcliff trail you will cross water 2 times. After that, for the next 5-7 miles round trip there is no place to get water.

I am 28, live in MA, so don't get up there much...Just started getting into hiking a couple years ago. I've done 6 so far..Cannon, Tom, Hale, Washington, Pierce, Eisenhower....42 more to go!

Just wanted to know what people think is the easiest 4,000 footer to hike, as my gf had a little trouble with Pierce/Eisenhower? and the hardest besides Washington? (I'm going up with the guys at the end of August)

Thanks!

Offhand, the easiest in my mind would be;
  • Moosilauke (the Beaver Brook trail is very difficult )
  • Osceola
  • Tecumseh
  • and maybe Willey

the hardest would be the first one of the season

I agree with Dudely.

Willey from the Ethan Pond Trail to Willey Ridge can be a challenge.
