Hello all! Been working away from home, sorry I haven't contributed lately, sounds like everyone's had a good summer hiking season.

I've got new mushrooms growing in my garden that look like shitake. I love mushrooms and have dreams of cultivation (on my list of things to learn), I know I read chatter about yummy shrooms and if I'm not miskaten dudley is an afficianado.
Can anyone recommend a book or some sort of reference that could possibly lead to me eating these wonderful treats?

Thanks!

my buds and I are on for Haystack, Lincoln and Lafayette on the 20th.
I can't wait!! I work way too much.

Joe

I think Dudley may be able to chime in on this. I think he's into mushrooms (child of the 70's) if I recall from a previous post.

Hey Joe
As you probably could guess, don't ever assume a mushroom is edible just 'cuz it looks good
I'm comfortable picking certain easily identifiable 'shrooms, but for most, I make a positive ID with my field guide.
I use The National Audubon Society Field Guide to North American Mushrooms. I'm sure there are other good ones, but I couldn't tell you what they are.
There are some good web sites also, but for tramping around in the woods, a field guide is essential
This is one "local" web site that I like. From there you can link to some more extensive sites

http://mushroom-collecting.com/

And just for the record. I've never found any of those mushrooms, Andrew
(not saying that I haven't looked though B) )
