Does anyone know if there are designated, public access roads that are good for four wheel drive vehicles? I've heard there are maps you can get of roads that are awesome to drive on with a jeep.
I'm not looking for anything too crazy, just decent sight seeing wilderness roads. I also don't want to trespass, so I'm looking for legal access. I'd buy a permit if needed!
Cheers!
Andrew

In Maine, not NH
and not public roads... private, but open to the public for a fee
http://www.northmainewoods.org/
This is a huge chunk of land....maybe a third of the state
A lot of "wild".. some fantastic camp sites..
Just watch out for the logging trucks

Cool, I'm going to contact the White Mountain Nation Forest peeps and see if this sort of thing exists in NH. It must, i assume.

Pretty sure there's nothing like what you're looking for in the National Forest.
The area east of Pittsburgh and north of the Dead Diamond River drainage might fit the bill
Around Magalloway Mt.
It's a maze through there though .... better have a good map

There are a bunch of unpaved, closed in winter sort of roads up around the 13 mile woods. I bet even that would be cool to head out into.
(can you tell i just bought a jeep?

If you're just looking for cool dirt roads to drive on, check out the Sandwich Notch Road
It's one of the longest in the area and can be a bit rough for normal cars at least in the spring.
Some good altitude too.
Hike the Algonquin Trail up Sandwich Dome while you're there. Sandwich isn't a 4K but it's close (3993')
There's also an intersecting road that's even rougher that goes along the Beebe River
As far as I know that one's called the Beebe River Rd.

Success Pond Rd....Berlin
The road that goes through Nash Stream State Forest
Tunnel Brook... on the back side of Moosilauke
(now that I think about it, this is called North South Rd. It's not a rough road at all. It's a pleasant, quite, forest road.... boat launch ... picnic area?...nice)
I think that the Wild River Rd might be closed to traffic now.. not sure.. there's a new "wilderness" designation for the area
Hurricane Mt Road is paved but it's a hoot anyway (steep)
