Wheeler Mountain (2371) to the west of Lake Willoughby in the Northeast Kingdom of Vermont was described as a lot of bang-for-the-buck. It proved true Saturday (5/24). An easy to sometimes moderate climb of mixed woods and ledge, with spectacular views to the north and west on the way up and views of Lake Willoughby from the top (and from Eagle Cliff). We took the white trail (1.3) one way.

Saturday was clear with only a light breeze, with temperatures in the 70's. The black flies were not biting, but they certainly were pests in the wooded areas. They were in our eyes, noses and when you opened your mouth, you were certain to have a taste.

The road in was rough with Wheeler Mountain Road (dirt) easily passable in a pickup (never needed the 4x4), however, a car would be dicey, but with care could be done. The easier and most traveled way in is off Route 5 and while also dirt is fine.

The red trail we were told is a bit steeper, and shorter (maybe by a tenth of a mile). Jay Peak is easily within sight, Mt. Lafayette, Mt washington were clearly visible as is the ski area at Burke Mountain. Mt Pisgah and Mt. Hor are very close and standout dramatically at the southern end of the lake.

We stopped several times on the way up to enjoy the views so its hard to say how long it would take. It took 40 minutes to descend.

There are plenty of other hikes in the area, Wheeler Pond, Moose Mountain, Pisgah, Hor and Hedgehog Mountain with views of Lake Willoughby. This was our first hiking trip in the Northeast Kingdom. It is a beautiful area well worth another visit.
