I hiked out on Napatree this past weekend to take advantage of the warm weather.
I came across a harbor seal lying in the sand.

That's fantastic, was it bothered by you being there?

Very cute. I've seen them sunbathing on rocks, but I've never seen one come up on the beach.

When you fish the outer beaches on the Cape, pods of 8 or a dozen will follow you up and down the beach. Nearly every time. And if you happen to surprise a pod resting on the shore, you need to back off.... Those big bulls aren't all that friendly and will come after you.
The pups on the other hand like to play.
I've had them surface right next to me in the kayak, then make a beaver tail like slap and swim away. About the time your heart stops pounding.... they come back and do it again. It's not some kind of danger signal, they're just messin' with you.
And when you're wading deep, they'll swim right up to you for a look-see..... that's kinda scary

I was once romancing a young lady under the moonlight and stars of Sandy Neck on the Cape. We were otherwise distracted and didn't notice the seal. It stood silently at the foot of our blanket and watched (no telling how long). It could have been her scream, or it could have been mine. But the noise and explosion of arms and legs seemed to frighten it away. They are not uncommon here on the beaches.

Great pics, Soundbounder! I see them from time to time in Plymouth, and sometimes they're injured. But I like the coloring on this seal, pretty cool. It's a better sight than the dead seal I saw a couple days ago while walking the beach in Scituate.
