Hey folks, my girlfriend & I hiked this past weekend, staying Sat night at the Riga Shelter area. We parked at Rte 41, hiked up the Undermountain Trail to the AT, went south to Riga Shelter. It stopped raining a few hours before we got there. Used one of the new tent platforms the maintainers built. They also added some new steps up to the shelter itself and a new privy. Gr8 job by the maintainers!

Easter Sunday gave us a nice sunrise, though it was still a bit chilly. Sat night was a little cold, but we were fine. The forecast for Sun was 55 degrees, but felt like it was in the mid 40s. We went north up over Bear Mountain and took Paradise Lane back to Rte 41, so it was a good hike. The trail was very clear on the south side, due to the maintainers clearing the fallen trees from the past storms. The north side still had plenty of fallen trees, so had to navigate over & around them. But no ice or snow, and we had a gr8 time getting away even just for a night. My hat's off to everyone who gave time & energy in helping to clear the trail of all the debris.

Sounds great, glad you could get out.

If you don't mind my asking, why did you chose that area
I wouldn't think western CT would be a top choice for someone from Plymoth

Hey Dudley, thanks. Originally, we were thinking of going up to NH, Lafayette & Franconia area, and that's really where I wanted to go. But there's still a bunch of snow up there, and honestly, I just wanted to hike & not do anymore snowshoeing, lol. Besides, it was raining up there for a couple days.

It was a choice of either side of the state border between CT & MA. I hadn't hiked any trails in CT yet, so that sounded good to me. The Berkshires in MA are nice this time of year also, but we settled on a route that took us up Bear Mountain. Anywhere that has some mountains or good inclines is better hiking, at least compared to Plymouth. Plymouth is nice, but it's very flat. So the drive for us was longer, but it was a good time and glad we did it.
