If you've ever stopped by the Mountain Wanderer Book Shop in Lincoln and had the opportunity to talk with Steve Smith, then you know how well informed and interesting he is to talk with. His Mountain Wanderer website (www.mountainwanderer.com) has much more than books and maps. Steve also has a new blog where he writes and posts photographs from his most recent hikes. He helped compile and is co-editor of the current WMG and the author of several books and articles about the White Mountains.

I make a point of stopping in for a "quick" visit every time I'm up in Lincoln. 2 hours later........ But, seriously I do make a point of buying something from him every time because it helps support someone who's been very influential in the hiking/snowshoeing world. The guy's a great person to chat with. Even though he probably sees 100's of people like me every day, he still has the enthusiasm of a newcomer. I personally like to read outdoorsy, survival type books and there's no shortage of them there. The problem is that I usually alot a certain amount of $ and I ALWAYS exceed that amount! Plus one of the things that kills me is the rare, limited edition, out of print books that he has for sale that I can't p/u.I want them all but can't necessarily afford them.

Same here, I always buy something and usually spend more than I intended. But like you say, he's got a very interesting selection of books and maps. Steve is a great guy to talk with. He is extremely knowledgeable when it comes to hiking, etc. and no matter how long between visits, he always remembers your name. That's a good businessman.
